Overview
A one-day practical course covering safety equipment, launching and recovery, low and high speed handling, buoyage, tides and weather, and emergency procedures. Usually the certificate launch sites and insurers ask for.
Some centres supply the ski, wetsuit and buoyancy aid; others train you on your own machine, which is worth doing if you have just bought and want handling specific to it.
Coastal navigation, VHF radio (SRC), first aid, safety boat and tow techniques, plus coaching for freeride, racing and long-distance touring.
Costs
Course prices vary with location, whether craft hire is included, and instructor-to-student ratio. Ask whether the certificate fee, wetsuit hire and fuel are included in the quoted price.
Most UK launch sites, harbour authorities and insurers want to see an RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency certificate before you put a ski in the water. Beyond the paperwork, a day with an instructor teaches tides, buoyage, re-boarding and close-quarters handling — the things that keep an expensive machine off the rocks.
